Originally started as a children's shoe business, the French company expanded during the sixties into adult footwear, accessories and a women’s ready-to-wear sports collection. CELINE has been owned by LVMH group since 1996 but was founded in 1945 by Céline Vipiana and her husband Richard Vipana. The Céline brand really came into its own during the Phoebe Philo era as creative director. Branded the ‘saviour’ of Celine, Phoebe reintroduced Vipana’s original aesthetic with a much more contemporary, minimalist chic look. Today, headed by the artistic, creative and image director Hedi Slimane, the brand focuses on a similar sense of modernity but with a lot more of an edgier allure. Slimane has taken Philo’s neutral colour tones and added some of his signature glam-rock undertones to the brand’s offering. He very noticeably and controversially removed the accent from the Celine name when ushering in this new era for the CELINE Brand.
The CELINE eyewear collection works with the same bold Parisian styles seen through a variety of frame shapes and colours. The collection of CELINE frames really reflects Hedi Slimane’s unique style while staying true to the traditional CELINE bourgeois vision.
